Lord, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me. For troubles surround me—too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage. Psalm 40:11-12 (MSG)
The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. Lamentations 3:22-23 (NLT)
Outgrowing the Box
Saturday, Terry and I packed away the Christmas decorations. Since we’ve been married, we have started, and added to, an ornament collection. Every ornament on our tree is special in some way. Each one has its own box. Unpacking and packing them is a chore, but it’s delightful since they are intricate and special to us.
The individual boxes fit into a plastic storage tote that has grown in size over the years. Part of the fun of un-decorating the tree is working out the puzzle that is the storage tote. This year, we outgrew the tote from last year.
No matter how we tried, and re-tried we could not get all the individual boxes to fit into the storage tote. A few of the ornaments spilled over into another box, where they wait until next year to rejoin their companions.
You have experienced this, regardless of what you are trying to pack or put away. You have grabbed a bowl that was too small, a sack that couldn’t hold all your stuff or a box that didn’t have the right dimensions. You have, no doubt, packed, unpacked, reorganized, repacked and then realized, your container isn’t big enough.
A Box for God
How big is the container you have for God? Is the box you have for God too small? Have you tried to stuff God’s immense love and mercy for you into some little box? Have you simply ignored the “left-overs” deciding you have enough? Do you still wish you could have more than your box holds?
Read King David’s words in Psalm 40; these are the words of a man who realized he needed God’s mercy. Are you in over your head? Have you tried all the things you can think of to make God “like” you? Have you tried to undo all the wrong you’ve done and still find yourself coming up short? Are there days when life is too difficult?
If you’re answer is “YES!” to any of those questions, let me encourage you. Throw away your box.
God Without Restriction
Experience God’s mercy. Experience the mercy that is new every morning; it’s the mercy that comes from a never-ending love. It’ comes from a God who can’t be contained by our petty and trivial estimations of His goodness, love and mercy. God is more willing to forgive and love you than you are to be sinful.
Be convinced that God is bigger than your sin, the consequence of you sin, your problem or your bad habit. God’s mercy is greater. Join King David in his realization;
“I’m in a desperate situation!” David replied to Gad. “But let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy is great. Do not let me fall into human hands.” 2 Samuel 24:14 (NLT)
Let God be merciful to you without restriction.
Father, open my heart to your mercy. Forgive me of my pride that keeps me from your mercy. Help me put away my notions of what you want to accomplish in my life. Pour your never-ending mercy one me every day.
