1 Peter 1: 3: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…”
Signs of spring surrounded us as we hiked up the long North Carolina hill. Dogwoods bloomed and fresh ivy tendrilled down the rock walls. At the top of the trail, my daughter, Hannah, and I set eyes on Carl Sandburg’s house.
Bringing New Life
We hoped to catch a tour of the Sandburg home and hear about his life as a writer. Because we arrived early for the tour, the guide encouraged us to visit the barns first. Mrs. Sandburg was a goat farmer and the farm still bred and raised a lineage of goats. A small barn stood on the grounds, and several goats meandered through the meadow.
As we explored the barnyard we found a pleasant surprise. Two kids (baby goats) had been born less than twenty-four hours before our arrival. The mama goat let us pet them even though she protected the babies from her peers. The freshness of spring kissed their skin.
One of them rose on little legs and wobbled about while the other rested, content under a manger. So sweet and innocent, yet ready for life.
God’s Grace Revitalizes
The newborn kids reminded me that God’s grace pours refreshment over me and restores my Spirit. When I think about new life, I thank God for Jesus. He not only died on the cross, he rose again to give me a new life. So that I might have hope, he took on my sins and poured out his blood to be raised in the beauty of life. I am humbled to know that God loves me so much. Praise God for new birth through Jesus.
