Characteristics of a Friendship
Why have you chosen the friends that you have? Are you friends with them because of their appearance? Are you friends with them because of the things that they do for you? Imagine being friends with someone just because you liked the things that they give you or the image that they help you portray. Is that a real friendship?
A real friendship consists of you getting to know a person and their heart. You know what makes them upset and what makes them happy. You now how they tick because of the long conversations that go until three in the morning or the moments that they call you in tears. You could say that you know the ‘raw’ version of them.
A Friendship With God
Is this how you interact with God? Do you have long conversations until three in the morning or come to him in tears?
When going after God’s heart, you should pursue Him like a friendship. Pursue him for His heart, not the things that He does for you. Get to know what makes Him happy and what makes Him sad. In times of sadness and trouble, pray to Him like you would call a friend. Seek after God’s heart like you would a friend.
God will always be there for you even when your closest friends will not. Learn to lean on Him in times of trouble and good will happen.
Seeking God’s Heart
Now, I am not saying that I do not struggle with this because I do. It is hard to seek someone who you cannot see. Luckily, when seeking him as a friend we can hear him. I encourage you to seek after God’s heart as you would a friend’s heart.
But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.
