The story of Nehemiah is compelling. It is the story of how one person can make a difference against seemingly insurmountable odds to accomplish a task of greatness!
A little background…
Man on a Mission
Nehemiah is a man with a mission-to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. The news of the disrepair of Jerusalem, the once beautiful city of David and Solomon, brought sadness, spurring him to do something to right this terrible tragedy.
Now Nehemiah was a displaced Israelite who had been taken into captivity. He was clearly in no position to do anything in Jerusalem. Yet God had positioned him in just the right place to accomplish this mighty work. Nehemiah was serving as a cupbearer for King Artaxerxes of Persia.
Nehemiah was a faithful servant of the Lord God Jehovah. His despair over the condition of the great city drove him to his knees. What could he do?
Humbling himself before the Lord, he prayed a powerful prayer of confession of sin, both his and his people’s. He reminded God of His promise to gather the people back to Israel.
James 5:16b confirms what Nehemiah already knew:
“The effectual fervent prayers of a righteous man availeth much.” (KJV)
God Answers Prayers
God heard Nehemiah and responded with much favor and help. Hearing Nehemiah’s news about the condition of Jerusalem, King Artzxerxes responded positively. He gave his permission for Nehemiah to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls. Plus, the King provided all the materials and resources that would be needed.
In time Nehemiah and the people of Jerusalem accomplished this great task. It was a mighty work they undertook with opposition all around. Most importantly, God demonstrated His faithfulness to ensure the work was accomplished.
Rebuilding the Walls of Faith
Maybe you have walls that need to be rebuilt in your life. Maybe sin has crept in, bringing sorrow of heart and separation from God and those who are closest to you. A compromised life has sidetracked you from the purpose for which you were created.
God has a plan for you as a Believer. God wants your heart. He wants you to rebuild the walls that guard your heart. Cleanse your heart, put off the sin that has taken hold of you. Purpose in your heart to put away your sin. Confess in prayer every known sin. Forsake it. Seek the Lord to receive His forgiveness and cleansing.
The Benefit of Walls
Raising the walls of a life consecrated to Jesus keeps us from giving in to temptation and builds a desire for a life of obedience. When your walls are strong and sound, you will be able to withstand the temptation of the devil. You will be resolute in your love for Christ.
Hebrews 10:22-24 describes what we must do…
“Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:”
It’s time to rebuild the walls of faith in Jesus Christ. May we be steadfast and resolute in our faith, consecrated to our Lord, trusting Him to help us endure difficult times. Let us answer the call to help others build walls of faith.
“For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.” 1 Thessalonians 4:7
