My son has always had an inquiring mind. When he was very young, his inquisitiveness often interfered with compliance at bedtime. In order to ensure a good night’s sleep for both him and us, my husband and I instituted a three-question rule after tucking him in. Only three questions, then he had to get to sleep.
This approach worked great for simple questions requiring brief answers. One night, though, he asked a question that even scholarly adults struggle to answer. At age six, his asked, “Why are we here? Why are we even alive?”
Stunned by the depth of his question, I hesitated before answering, wanting to make the most of this teachable moment. Upon refection, though, I knew for certain how best to answer.
The Wrong Reasons for Living
Even though God created us for a reason, many people live their entire lives unaware of why they exist. They waste years in diligent study or in fruitless pursuit of the answer, yet never find true meaning. Sadly, many conclude that life is meaningless, and of no value other than filling up space in the atmosphere, so they instead live their lives according to their own desires.
Contrary to popular belief, though, life is not about finding fulfillment through selfish pursuits. Successful careers, loving relationships and fun times are all satisfying, but none of these fulfills our true reason for living.
The Real Reason for Living
I based the answer I gave my son, as to why we are here, on God’s own word:
“Everyone who is called by My name, Whom I have created for My glory; I have formed him, yes, I have made him.” Isaiah 43:7
God created us to glorify Him. Unfortunately, not everyone does. Living apart from Him, they may find temporal fulfillment, but in the end, such a life will not matter. Only by recognizing and yielding our lives to God, thus bringing Him glory, do we find life’s meaning.
The reason we glorify God is that He alone is deserving of all glory and honor. Other so-called gods are not; we are not. The God who formed us also loved us enough to send His Son to die for us. Jesus deserves all the honor and glory.
Jesus is Our Reason for Living
God revealed His glory in Jesus. By trusting Him, we find our way back to God, and then have no doubt as to life’s meaning. Because of Jesus, I had no trouble answering my son’s yearning to understand life’s meaning. Life is about Jesus. The reason we live is to glorify Him.
What do we get in return? By knowing and glorifying God throughout our lives, we gain the hope of glory in heaven. This is quite a trade off and an amazing reason to live!
Do you struggle with knowing why you are on this earth? Give your life to God and bring glory to Him. By doing so, you will find your real reason for living.
