It wasn’t so long ago that we ourselves were stupid and stubborn, dupes of sin, ordered every which way by our glands, going around with a chip on our shoulder, hated and hating back. But when God, our kind and loving Savior God, stepped in, he saved us from all that. It was all his doing; we had nothing to do with it. He gave us a good bath, and we came out of it new people, washed inside and out by the Holy Spirit. Our Savior Jesus poured out new life so generously. God’s gift has restored our relationship with him and given us back our lives. And there’s more life to come—an eternity of life! You can count on this. Titus 3:3-8 (MSG)
It’s January, but there are still gifts under the Christmas tree. Yes, the Christmas tree is still standing. Busy schedules and bad weather delayed some of the celebrations with family and friends. So, the gifts sit, unopened and waiting. There is love and joy in those boxes. Love and joy just waiting to be experienced by those who will open those gifts.
The apostle Paul, wrote a short letter to the young pastor, Titus. Paul gave Titus many instructions about how to set-up and get this new church moving in the right direction. There are many rules of order laid out for Titus. It seems people need rules to work in a group.
Towards the end of Paul’s letter, the minister of grace could not hold it in any longer.
Can you relate to the first words of chapter 3? Stupid, stubborn, deceived by sin, running around trying to selfishly satisfy every urge, angry that nothing you tried filled the void; those days can end. Maybe you’re still trying to earn your gift. Maybe you didn’t know there is a gift with your name on it.
There is still one more gift under the tree. Through no action of your own, God through Jesus wants to pour His kindness on YOU. God offers the gift of restoration in Jesus’ sacrifice for your sin. Paul describes God as “our kind and loving Savior God.” What a breath of fresh air!
Do you need some loving kindness today? Do you need a Savior today? God knew you did. God gave the gift of His Son so YOU could have a relationship with Him. God gave the gift of His Son so He could have a relationship with YOU. That’s how much God loves YOU. God’s love for you overwhelms Him.
In that gift, you’ll find life. Not the kind of life you once had; God’s love changes everything. You’ll find rest and peace in the love that God offers. You’ll find wholeness and satisfaction. You’ll find God’s love moving you to love others. You’ll be changed by God’s love.
Take that gift, unwrap it, get to know the God who wants nothing more than to love and be loved by YOU. Let God be the kind and loving Savior He is. Don’t shy away because you’re not perfect. He knows that you’re not. Don’t leave that gift unopened because someone else hurt you. God’s love can heal those wounds. Don’t ignore that gift because you have one more selfish desire to fulfill. The life God has for you is infinitely more fulfilling.
Come collect your gift. Open it up and experience the kind and loving Savior.
