The Necessity of the Church
Many Christians seem to believe that church is not important, that Christianity is all about what you do and how you show love. This is not true. Yes, living for Christ is important, but we need church. We are the body of Christ, not an individual person. We need church to feel inspired, to join in community, and also to learn more about God’s word.
People think church is a religious institution and that Christianity should not be a religion, instead it should be a relationship with God. I agree that Christianity should be about having a relationship with God. What better way to strengthen that relationship with God by joining your brothers and sisters to worship his Holy Name? As Hebrews says, “Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” –Hebrews 10:25
The Purpose of Church
Church should not be something you do every week because it is a habit, it should be something you do to become encouraged by God. When I was young I used to attend church because my family attended. I never wanted to go on Sunday mornings; I felt as if it was just something I had to do. I did not have a relationship with the Lord.
It was not until my college years that I truly understood what it meant to find joy in the Lords name. I went to church because I wanted to learn more, I wanted to worship Him with my friends. I was on fire for about two years, then after that I started to go to church less and less. My faith was becoming weak; in a way I felt my heart was missing something. I figured out it was church I was missing.
I thought I could sustain my relationship with God while not attending church. This was not possible because I needed my church community, and the opportunities of learning God’s word. I started going back to church and I realized, church is so vitally important to maintain a good relationship with God.
We Don’t Know How Good We Have It
In America we have it very easy, we are able to go to church every Sunday without being persecuted. In certain countries they have to meet secretly with the constant fear of being arrested or killed. I believe people such as those show the importance of church. They are risking their lives to meet so they can worship and discuss God. Yes, Christianity should be a relationship more than it is a religion. Yet, we need to maintain that relationship by learning more about scripture, and worshiping the Lord as a body of Christ.
Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 1 Corinthians 12:27
