I was so excited to be going on my first foreign missions trip. I was finally going to be fulfilling a long time desire. I was traveling to Thailand. Our team was going to provide medical clinics in rural areas. I could hardly wait to share the kindness of Jesus with the Thai people. It was a time to live the Great Commission. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” Matthew 28:19-20.
An Unexpected Opportunity
Something unexpected happened on that trip to Thailand. Joanne, one of my team members and I were waiting in an unusually long line to go through security. An amiable gentleman started chatting with us. He asked where we were going and why we were going there. We explained, and then Joanne, my team member and friend, took the lead to ask him about his faith. He said he was Muslim. After a friendly conversation, Joanne asked if she could give him a Bible. He said no, but she did not give up. She explained why the Bible was so important to us. She told him it was the Word of God. As she spoke, I prayed.
As the conversation continued, he asked me if I had ever gone on a trip like this before. I told him that I had not gone oversees on a mission, but I had been involved in disaster relief in the US. This piqued his interest. He asked a lot of questions, including “Why would you spend so much time doing this?” I told him about Jesus’ love for me. I explained that Jesus’ kindness compelled me to be kind to others.
God’s Tug on our Friends Heart
We talked for quite a while and our new friend shared about his life and family. He asked us if we would pray for him and his fiancé. He even wrote his name down so we would remember it. Before we got through the security gate, he asked if he could have the Bible we offered him. Of course, we gave it to him gladly. He hugged us and rushed off. We headed to our gate.
About ten minutes later, he was back. He brought each of us a box of See’s candy and hugged us again. I will never forget this encounter, and I will continue to pray for our dear friend. God had allowed me to become a foreign missionary, witnessing to a Muslim from Turkey, in LAX. I did not expect to be on the mission field until I got to Thailand, but the Great Commission is “Go and make disciples of all nations” Matthew 28:19 and I learned that God will use us wherever we are, whenever He calls.
