Recently, I bought my husband a new brand of shower gel. I bought the particular brand because it was on sale, but after I got home I had to laugh at the label. It says, “Smells Like: Wilderness, Open Air, Freedom.” Initially, I thought it was clever marketing for men who work mostly in cubicles in big offices who just want to experience that outdoor fresh feeling every morning.
As I pondered it further, I wondered, what does “Freedom” smell like? Can freedom really be bottled up as a fragrance for individuals to experience each day?
Jesus said, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” And Paul wrote, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” Paul also wrote, “For freedom Christ has set us free…” and “For you were called to freedom, brothers.”
As a follower of Jesus Christ, I have been set free. Jesus came to set me free…free from the bondage of sin and death. Free to be the person he created me to be. I have access to this freedom each day, and it doesn’t come out of a shower gel bottle.
Paul writes “But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing…”
I am a fragrance of Christ to those around me. Because I am free in Christ, I am a fragrance of freedom to the individuals I come into contact with each day. Can they smell the difference?
I pray that my life is a fragrant aroma that pleases the Lord and that it directs others to the only One who can make us free indeed.
