Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life
Years ago, I had my first experience at selling a home. Since the market back then favored buyers, it took more than a year to sell, and happened only after creative presentation efforts on the part of my husband and me.
Frustrated about the stalled market, we signed with a realtor known for getting homes sold. Based on her recommendations, we made several changes, like removing excessive pictures off our walls and eliminating clutter. Since potential buyers could find a brand new home at a similar cost, she encouraged us to give our older home a ready to move in appearance with a clean, motel look. Unfortunately, she also suggested new carpeting.
Although not wanting the expense, my husband and I trusted our realtor’s advice and purchased plush new flooring. However, she also urged us to maintain the carpet’s new look. She even asked that we broom brush away our footprints when leaving, in order to enhance the move in appearance she sought!
We were even less enthusiast about her carpet brushing suggestion than its actual purchase, but out of a strong need to get our home sold, we complied. Our peculiar task actually became comical after weeks of brushing, especially with three children in the mix! Though peculiar, through the experience I gained an awareness of how many footprints one generates, and of all the tracks left behind as we walk through life.
Footprints of Sin, Since Human
As imperfect humans, we often leave tracks of things we regret. As self-driven and in a fallen state, we all leave behind footprints of sin.
God’s marvelous news is that there is an alternate path. Followers of the Good Shepherd, those true believers in Christ, have access to a sort of heavenly brushing away of sins. His sheep receive erasure of sins through repentance; His followers obtain goodness through yielding to His love. Believers can leave behind footprints MADE good through mercy. This is wonderful news because God’s mercy and goodness are available to all who will believe on Him!
Footprints Made Good Through God’s Mercy
Even as believers, since human we still sin. Thankfully, God is always willing to brush away the wrong. Since He is good, He gradually changes us to resemble Him, thereby ensuring that mercy and goodness results. As Jesus leads, we simply follow. Remarkably, all left behind is His goodness and mercy as He forgives our wrongs!
I am not entirely sure which, if any, of our home improvements worked, but not long after signing with our new realtor, the house sold. It is doubtful that our carpet brushing did anything more than give us sore arms. The experience, though, will always remind me of how God mercifully erases sins by the shed blood of His Son, and how we benefit. Because of Jesus, what follows us is most assuredly goodness due to His mercy, all the days of our lives!
