From the very first day, we were there, taking it all in—we heard it with our own ears, saw it with our own eyes, verified it with our own hands. The Word of Life appeared right before our eyes; we saw it happen!
And now we’re telling you in most sober prose that what we witnessed was, incredibly, this: The infinite Life of God himself took shape before us. We saw it, we heard it, and now we’re telling you so you can experience it along with us, this experience of communion with the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. Our motive for writing is simply this: We want you to enjoy this, too. Your joy will double our joy! 1 John 1:1-4 (MSG)
I sat, listening to the salesperson’s spiel. Only slightly convinced I purchased one of the cloths that would “change my life.” I started using the cloth, following the directions given in the demonstration. That cloth really DID make my windows shine. My streaky, smudgy windows became transparent. I was thrilled. I cleaned all my windows that day, in record time. I told all my friends – what the lady said is true – these cloths DO clean using only water.
Prior to that day, I had never been excited about a piece of cloth or cleaning the windows. Experiencing the outrageous sounding claims changed my perspective. I spend most of my time listening to sales people with a skeptical ear. I have loads of products that don’t live up to their claims. Finding one that did, was exciting even if it was only a cleaning cloth.
Humanity’s reach always extends upward. Regardless of the culture, humanity reaches out to some entity or higher power. It may be a spirit. It may be a person. In some cultures, political leaders, athletes, actors or musicians receive worship. Some people elevate themselves to that holy place and worship their own desires.
These make feeble gods. It doesn’t take long for the weakness to appear. Political scandal, a botched game, a broken leg, a night of indiscriminate partying, a bad performance and the frailty is inescapable. Inevitability, you’ll find worshiping this kind of god is a waste of time, because he or she is just like you.
If you pour your energy into worshiping yourself, you quickly find your soul is a bottomless pit you can’t fill no matter how hard you try, how much you gain or how much you learn. You can’t fill yourself. All your efforts leave you empty AND tired.
How joyous are the words written by John! John and his friends were eyewitnesses to Jesus, the precious gift from God. John’s excitement is the excitement of one who has experienced the greatness and the fulfilled promise. It’s the enthusiasm of one who knows firsthand how amazing Jesus is. John and his friend’s experience was so great they were compelled to share it with you. Try it, you’ll love it! Once you try it, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it! It’s not the cry of a peddler trying to sweet-talk you into buying snake oil. It’s the word of someone who tried God (with a capital G) and found out the claims are true.
Evaluate your gods. Do they measure up? Are you frustrated, hoping this time, this god, will change your life? Are you tired of following a formula that is supposed to lead you to wholeness but instead leaves you tired and empty?
There is good news! GOD wants to have fellowship with you. God’s love for you is so deep; He did all the work to make a relationship possible. Abandon your puny gods for a life with The One God.
Father, thank You for living up to the claims. Thank You for Your love and for Your “truth-in-advertising.” Thank You for being all You say You are! Thank You for inviting me to have a relationship with You.
