So watch your step, friends. Make sure there’s no evil unbelief lying around that will trip you up and throw you off course, diverting you from the living God. For as long as it’s still God’s Today, keep each other on your toes so sin doesn’t slow down your reflexes. If we can only keep our grip on the sure thing we started out with, we’re in this with Christ for the long haul.
These words keep ringing in our ears: “Today, please listen; don’t turn a deaf ear as in the bitter uprising.” – Hebrews 3:12-14 (MSG)
Many tedious hours of micro-dissection, measuring and mixing various concoctions, topped off with more hours at the electron microscope; that is my memory of graduate school. I looked in awestruck admiration at my major professor. He was a kind, intelligent man who diligently worked on the same project, or a slightly modified version of the same project for many years.
That was not the life for me. I don’t like never ending projects. I like distinct events. I like beginnings and endings. Research was a project that began but, from what I could see, had no distinct ending. I would finish a portion of the project, write a paper and then tweak that project ever so slightly, and continue essentially the same work.
The work I was doing was interesting, but the prospect of never reaching a final conclusion to the work depressed me. The circumstances of life made it easy for me to quit my research and not finish my thesis.
In your humble walk with God, have your feet grown tired. Does the distant horizon have you depressed? Are you making slow progress through a bramble patch of hardship and adversity? Have you fallen down and “sprained” your faith?
Let this passage encourage you TODAY. Today is the day God calls to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with Him. God’s thoughts concerning you aren’t fixed on that stumble that occurred yesterday. God isn’t worried about His ability to get you through the rocky patch that’s ahead. God is totally committed to walking with you TODAY.
What is your commitment to walking with Him?
Does grief and remorse over past failures occupy your TODAY thoughts? Does your gaze at someone else’s path of seeming ease distract you from walking TODAY on the path God has for you? Are you standing at the bottom of a steep hill, with raised eyebrows thinking “Really? This is my path, God?” Are you trying to negotiate a different route?
God’s desire is that you walk with Him TODAY. If others, your circumstances or your own stubbornness distract you, take a few moments and think back about one specific thing. Keep your grip on the sure thing you started with; we are in this with Christ, for the long haul. (MSG)
God wants you to walk with Him TODAY. If your past is tripping you up TODAY, repent. God will forgive and forget. Carrying your failures on your walk with God will trip you up and slow you down. Looking ahead will discourage you. Your entire journey is not the goal of TODAY. God has new mercy every day, for the journey of TODAY.
As a believer you are called to walk with a TODAY God. Delight in that. When you want to quit, take one more step. When you see too many uncertain tomorrows, turn your gaze back to The One beside you. Encourage yourself by looking at Christ’s example.
Keep your feet moving, TODAY.
Father, thank You for being a TODAY God. Teach me the importance of keeping my gaze focused on YOU. Increase my faith to trust the path You’ve chosen for me and strengthen my spirit when I am weak. When I want to take my own path that seems easier, remind me of Your love for me. Help me to rely on Your never-ending supply of mercy for each TODAY I face.
